About the Spot

Mutianyu Great Wall is located in Mutianyu Village, Bohai Town, Huairou District, approximately 73 km from downtown Beijing. It is one of the finest sections of the Great Wall. Built during the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty (1368) under the supervision of General Xu Da, it has been reinforced multiple times since. At 5,400 meters long, it is the longest open section of the Great Wall in China, featuring 23 watchtowers. The Zhengguan Terrace, formed by three hollow watchtowers, is unique along the entire Great Wall.

Renowned for its beauty, Mutianyu enjoys the reputation of "the most scenic section of the Great Wall." With 96% vegetation coverage, each season offers distinct charm — wildflowers in spring, lush greenery in summer, vibrant foliage in autumn, and snow-dusted walls in winter. From mid-October to early November, the mountains blaze with maple, smoke tree, and ginkgo colors contrasting against the ancient Great Wall — one of Beijing's most stunning autumn landscapes.

Compared to Badaling, Mutianyu has fewer visitors and a more comfortable experience. The scenic area is well-equipped with a domestic cable car and a German-imported toboggan — a 550-meter downhill ride that winds through the forest, thrilling and fun, especially beloved by children. Mutianyu Great Wall is also a frequent stop for visiting foreign dignitaries, giving it high international recognition.

Must-See Highlights

Watchtower 14 (Best Photo Spot)

The most iconic photo spot at Mutianyu. Looking west from here, the Great Wall winds along the ridge with watchtowers in sequence, distant mountains layered, and clouds drifting — the classic angle for stunning Great Wall photography. Golden light at sunrise and sunset is most dramatic. Many iconic Great Wall photographs are taken from this very spot.

Zhengguan Terrace (Triple Watchtowers)

Zhengguan Terrace is the gate of Mutianyu Pass, formed by three hollow watchtowers standing side by side — unique along the entire Great Wall. The three towers are aligned with the pass corridor in the center and imposing towers on each side, a masterpiece of ancient military defensive architecture. The exquisite structure fully demonstrates the craftsmanship of Ming Dynasty military construction.

Eagle's Upward Flight

Located at the westernmost end of Mutianyu, this extremely steep section is named because "even eagles must fly upward to cross it." Built on a near-vertical ridge with extreme gradients, the climb is thrilling. The wall retains its original wild character without major restoration — a sought-after destination for outdoor adventurers (proceed with caution).

Toboggan Experience

The German-imported stainless steel toboggan runs 550 meters downhill from above the wall. Riders control their own speed in specially designed carts, weaving through the forest — thrilling yet safe. Passing through trees and over gullies, it's Mutianyu's most distinctive experience and a children's favorite — the "Great Wall roller coaster."

Autumn Foliage Spectacle

From mid-October to early November, Mutianyu's 96% vegetation coverage erupts in color — smoke trees, red maples, ginkgoes, and five-pointed maples paint the mountains in brilliant hues. The Great Wall, framed by autumn foliage, appears even more majestic — hailed as one of "Beijing's most beautiful autumn foliage viewing spots." Climb Watchtower 14 for a panoramic view of this breathtaking landscape.

Recommended Routes

Classic West Section Highlights 2-3 hours

Take the cable car from the entrance to Watchtower 14, walk west to Watchtower 20, passing multiple classic towers and the best photo spots with views of the Great Wall winding through green mountains. Return from Tower 20 and take the cable car down. Covers Mutianyu's finest scenery — suitable for most visitors.

Cable Car + Toboggan Fun Tour 2-2.5 hours

Take the cable car to Watchtower 14, walk west along the wall to Watchtower 6 (Zhengguan Terrace) to see the unique triple towers, then ride the toboggan down from the nearby station. The 550-meter ride through the forest is thrilling and fun — ideal for families. This route combines sightseeing with entertainment.

Full Hiking Challenge 4-5 hours

Walk the entire wall from east to west, passing all 23 watchtowers. The eastern section is gentle, gradually steepening westward, reaching maximum challenge at Eagle's Upward Flight. The full 5.4 km route offers the complete Mutianyu Great Wall experience — suitable for fit outdoor enthusiasts. Bring plenty of water and snacks.

Autumn Foliage Photography Route 3-4 hours

Exclusive October route: enter at dawn, take the cable car to Watchtower 14 for sunrise golden light, then photograph the Great Wall and watchtowers framed by autumn foliage. Key shots: the panoramic view from Tower 14, Zhengguan Terrace with foliage close-ups, and wall-level foliage details. Bring a telephoto lens — late afternoon angled light produces the most saturated autumn colors.

Unique Experiences

German Toboggan: Mutianyu features a professional toboggan system imported from Germany — 550 meters long with a ~200-meter drop. The stainless steel track carts seat 1-2 people with manual brakes for speed control. Racing through the forest with wind rushing past is thrilling yet safe — loved by all ages. Weekday visits avoid long holiday queues.

Great Wall Sunrise/Sunset: Mutianyu is a premier location for Great Wall sunrise and sunset photography. Watch the first rays pierce through clouds and illuminate the wall from Watchtower 14 at dawn. At dusk, the western wall glows with sunset colors, making the Great Wall appear even more majestic. Sunrise viewing requires advance "sunrise tickets" (limited); sunset can be enjoyed during regular hours.

International Cultural Exchange: Mutianyu is one of the most popular Beijing attractions for international visitors and a frequent stop for visiting foreign dignitaries. You'll often meet travelers from around the world on the wall. The international art village at the foot of the Great Wall features works by artists from various countries — a unique East-meets-West cultural experience.

Rainbow Trout Feast: Huairou is the birthplace of rainbow trout farming in China. Farmhouse restaurants at the foot of Mutianyu serve authentic trout feasts — sashimi, grilled fish, fish soup, and fried fish bones, all exquisitely fresh. A hearty trout meal after climbing the Great Wall is the quintessential Mutianyu culinary experience.

Visitor Tips

Best Season: Mutianyu is beautiful year-round, but autumn (mid-Oct to early Nov) is the peak season with the most vibrant colors. Spring (Apr-May) wildflowers are also lovely with fewer crowds. The snow-covered Great Wall in winter has its own charm — dress warmly and watch for slippery paths.
Getting There: Take bus 916 Express from Dongzhimen to Huairou North Street (~60 min), then transfer to H23/24 bus or taxi to Mutianyu (~20 min). By car, take the Jingcheng Expressway toward Huairou (~73 km total). Large parking lot available. Weekday visits avoid congestion.
Toboggan Tips: Operations may be suspended in rain or snow. Riders over 1.4m tall may ride alone; under 1.4m must ride with an adult. Control your speed and avoid sudden braking on curves. Wear long pants to prevent scrapes. Peak season queues can exceed 1 hour — hike first and ride later.
Supplies: Few shops on the wall — bring sufficient water (at least 1L per person) and snacks. Water vendors on the wall charge premium prices. The entrance commercial area has better dining options — eat before or after your climb.
Mutianyu vs. Badaling: If you want the iconic "I climbed the Great Wall" experience and don't mind crowds, choose Badaling. For a more comfortable visit with better natural scenery and family entertainment (toboggan), Mutianyu is the better choice. Both are roughly equidistant from downtown Beijing.

Nearby Amenities

Dining: Restaurants near Mutianyu specialize in Huairou's signature rainbow trout and farmhouse dishes. Try "Yu Shifu" or "Yujiaao" for trout sashimi, grilled fish, and fish soup. Also available: chestnut banquets and wild vegetable feasts. The entrance area has Chinese and Western fast food options.

Accommodation: Mutianyu has quality lodging — boutique guesthouses at the foot of the Great Wall (like The Brickyard and Small Courtyard) offer wall-view rooms for an immersive experience. Standard resort hotels and chain hotels in Huairou are also available. Autumn foliage season is the busiest — book at least two weeks in advance.

Nearby Attractions: Mutianyu can be combined with nearby sites: Xiangshuihu Great Wall (~15 min drive, waterfalls and plum blossoms), Hongluo Temple (~30 min drive, millennium-old monastery), and Jiankou Great Wall (wild wall, for experienced hikers only). Yanqi Lake and Qinglong Gorge in Huairou are also worth visiting — allow two days for a thorough exploration.

Local Products: Huairou is famous for chestnuts and walnuts. Buy authentic Huairou oil chestnuts near the scenic area — sweet and soft. Also available: dried trout and wild mountain vegetables. The entrance commercial area offers Great Wall-themed souvenirs and creative products with better quality than roadside stalls.
