About the Spot

The Ming Tombs (Shisan Ling) are located at the southern foot of Tianshou Mountain in Changping District, Beijing. They represent the largest and most numerous imperial tomb complex in China and the world. From the construction of Changling in 1409 to the fall of the Ming dynasty over 230 years later, 13 emperors, 23 empresses, and 1 imperial consort were buried here, covering an area of approximately 120 square kilometers — a truly grand complex.

In 2003, the Ming Tombs were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List alongside the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum in Nanjing as part of the "Imperial Tombs of the Ming and Qing Dynasties." Surrounded by mountains on three sides with a river flowing through, the feng shui layout embodies the ancient Chinese philosophy of "unity of heaven and man," providing precious physical evidence for studying Ming dynasty politics, culture, architecture, and burial practices.

The main attractions open to visitors include: Dingling (the only excavated and accessible underground palace), Changling (the foremost of the thirteen tombs, featuring a rare golden nanmu hall), the Sacred Way (a spectacular stone statue-lined path), and Zhaoling. Each site carries rich historical information, letting you travel through six centuries to experience the grandeur and timeless legacy of the Great Ming dynasty.

Must-See Highlights

Dingling Underground Palace

Tomb of Emperor Wanli — the only excavated Ming imperial tomb. The 27m-deep underground palace has five halls entirely of stone, without a single beam. The rear hall houses marble coffin platforms for the emperor and two empresses. Over 3,000 artifacts were unearthed, including national treasures like gold and phoenix crowns.

Changling Ling'en Hall (Golden Nanmu Hall)

Changling is the mausoleum of Emperor Yongle (Zhu Di), the foremost of the thirteen tombs. The Ling'en Hall spans nine bays wide and five bays deep, with 60 massive columns made entirely from single golden nanmu logs, the largest measuring 1.17 meters in diameter — the largest surviving nanmu hall in China. The hall displays unearthed artifacts and Ming dynasty history exhibitions; standing within, one can feel the grandeur of imperial architecture from six centuries ago.

Sacred Way Stone Statues

The Sacred Way, also called the "Grand Spirit Path," stretches approximately 1,000 meters and serves as the main approach to all tombs. Lining both sides are 12 pairs of stone beasts and 6 pairs of stone figures, including lions, xiezhi (mythical beasts), camels, elephants, qilin, horses, and military generals, civil officials, and meritorious ministers. Carved during the Xuande period of the Ming dynasty, these stone statues are vivid in design and massive in scale, representing the finest of ancient Chinese stone carving art — walking among them feels like stepping back into the golden age of the Ming dynasty.

Zhaoling Tomb

Zhaoling is the tomb of Emperor Longqing (Zhu Zaihou) of the Ming dynasty, recently reopened after extensive restoration. The tomb's architectural layout is well-preserved, with the Ling'en Hall, Square City with Ming Tower, and Treasure City all in good condition. Compared to Dingling and Changling, Zhaoling attracts fewer visitors, allowing a more leisurely experience of Ming tomb solemnity and grandeur — a recommended stop for in-depth tours.

Grand Spirit Way and Great Red Gate

The Grand Spirit Way is the main entrance to all thirteen tombs. The Great Red Gate serves as the formal entrance to the tomb area, with three imposing arched doorways. The Five-Arch Stone Bridge and stele pavilion before the gate create a complete entry sequence. Walking along the Spirit Way, flanked by ancient pines and cypresses, with the rolling Tianshou Mountains in the distance, the solemn atmosphere of the imperial tombs permeates from the moment you pass through the Great Red Gate.

Unique Experiences

Underground Palace Exploration: The Dingling Underground Palace is the most awe-inspiring site among the Ming Tombs. Descending 27 meters underground via stairways, passing through massive white marble doors into the vast underground chambers. The constant temperature of ~17°C makes it cool in summer and warm in winter. Combined with dramatic lighting, the stone texture and spatial depth are perfectly presented, as if conversing with an emperor from six centuries ago across time.

Sacred Way Photography: The stone statues along the Sacred Way are a popular photography destination. Early morning and evening light is optimal, with the massive stone sculptures sharply silhouetted against the slanting sun — truly majestic. In spring, peach blossoms bloom on both sides; in autumn, golden ginkgo adds softness to the solemn statues. Aerial perspectives best capture the Sacred Way's magnificent scale.

Ming Dynasty Cultural Study: The scenic area features rich exhibitions and audio guide systems detailing the lives of Ming emperors, burial practices, and architectural techniques. The golden nanmu columns and unearthed artifacts in the Changling exhibition hall are awe-inspiring showcases of ancient craftsmanship. Ideal for youth study trips and history enthusiasts seeking deep cultural exploration.

Tianshou Mountain Hiking: The Tianshou Mountain area surrounding the tombs has multiple hiking trails. From higher vantage points, you can overlook the entire Ming Tombs complex — tombs distributed orderly among encircling mountains, with a reservoir's blue waters shimmering in the distance. Ideal for outdoor hiking enthusiasts; spring and autumn are recommended to avoid extreme heat and cold.
